When we think of memory in a computer, the place where data is stored, a hard drive or a USB stick might come to mind. The priority for each of these is capacity, and portability, respectively. There is in fact a less well-known memory type called a cache, which is optimized for speed, at the expense of storage capacity.
As we go about our lives, we are constantly drawing on prior experience, skills and memories, some more frequently than others. Indeed, the more often we recall a piece of information, the more efficient the search and retrieval process.
